Specialist Gum Care for Ageing Smiles

As we get older, changes in gum health and bone support become more common. Teeth that once felt stable may begin to shift, gums may recede, and sensitivity can increase.

A geriatric periodontist focuses on managing these age-related changes with care that supports both comfort and long-term function. This includes addressing gum disease, maintaining existing teeth, and helping prevent further deterioration.

Why Gum Health Matters More With Age

Healthy gums are essential for keeping teeth stable and functional over time. As bone density and tissue support change, maintaining gum health becomes even more important.

Ongoing care helps to:

  • Maintain natural teeth for longer
  • Reduce the risk of tooth loss
  • Support comfortable chewing and speaking
  • Prevent more complex procedures later

Consistent care allows for a more predictable and comfortable long-term outcome.

A Calm, Supportive Approach to Care

Treatment should feel manageable and clearly explained, especially when dental needs become more complex with age. Every step is discussed in a straightforward way so you can make informed decisions.

Appointments are planned with comfort in mind, allowing time to address concerns without feeling rushed.

If you’d like to discuss your situation or arrange a consultation, you can get in touch.

Frequently Asked Questions

As we age, gum tissue can thin and bone support may gradually reduce, making teeth more vulnerable to movement or sensitivity. Regular monitoring helps manage these changes before they become more serious.

You might notice slight recession, increased sensitivity, or changes in how your teeth feel when chewing. These early signs are often subtle but important to address.

Yes, crowns, bridges, or implants can place additional demands on the gums. Maintaining healthy tissue around them is essential, and in some cases may involve structured periodontal care.

Not always, but gum disease is one of the most common causes. When the supporting structures weaken, teeth can become loose over time if not managed properly.

Gum recession can become more common with age, but it’s not something to ignore. If needed, options like gum recession treatment can help improve support and comfort.

It depends on your individual condition, but regular reviews are important. Ongoing care allows small changes to be addressed before they progress.

Yes, some medications can affect saliva flow or gum tissue, increasing the risk of irritation or infection. This makes consistent oral care even more important.

Maintaining gum health is key. Early treatment, good daily habits, and consistent monitoring all help reduce the risk of losing teeth over time.

If you experience sudden discomfort, swelling, or infection, it’s best to act quickly. In these cases, emergency periodontal care may be needed to stabilise the condition.

The easiest way to get advice is through a professional periodontal assessment, where your gum condition, bone support, and overall oral health can be properly evaluated and explained.
